GasSim was developed and marketed by Golder Associates on behalf of the Environment Agency of England and Wales, and now has a user community of around 500 people worldwide.

Currently, the primary application of GasSim has been the landfill gas risk assessment component of landfill permit applications within the context of UK legislation, namely The Pollution Prevention and Control (England and Wales) Regulations 2000 and The Landfill (England and Wales) Regulations 2003 (and their Scottish and Northern Ireland equivalents). These Regulations implement the EC Landfill Directive and the EC Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive.

There are other specific uses which use only part of the model, including resource assessment, air quality and odour assessment, greenhouse gas impact assessment and human health risk assessment.

GasSim2 and GasSimLite
GasSimLite is fully functioning freeware based on GasSim version 1 which is designed to help landfill operators submit their Pollution Inventory responses to the Environment Agency
